MATCH REPORT: 28-Oct-07 - Renaissance Seniors A (Essex Cup)

28-Oct : Newbury Forest 4 v Renaissance Seniors A 2

Well another week, another win, but this doesn’t show us what the true picture of this match was like. The season so far has been one of us playing in patches. Sometimes we are great, sometimes we are poor, but generally we level out at alright. Today’s game was a classic example of that.

We got out of the blocks quickly and put them under real pressure. The pressure then told and we score the opening goal. Good wing play by Alfie and a neat finish by Jon Galligan.  All of that pressure that had got us into this lead then evaporated. The work rate dropped and all of a sudden they were in the ascendancy. They were beating us to the 50-50’s and really making them 70-30’s in their favour. It was as if the team decided that they were rubbish because we had scored first and it was going to be another white wash. Well the last time I checked we’re not Barcelona, and teams aren’t going to fear us. In fact I think it’s the opposite, teams think we’re a bunch of keano’s who think they are a lot better than what they are. I give them a lot of credit because they did the ugly things well; they got in our face and made us make mistakes.

By half time we were down 2-1, and the team was on the verge of a breakdown with everybody having something to say and bickering between one another.  Now it’s something that has been said before, but this team does have an inner belief that they can go far, and that they can overcome any challenge. However with 45 to go not many would have bought into this ideal. The only thing said at half time was for every one to shut up and get on with their own game, let your feet do the talking. Very simple, but boy how effective it was.

For a good 15mins of that second half it was wave on wave attacks, but still no break through. The difference with this half was that there was no let up, everyone kept on going until we got the break through. Funny enough, it wasn’t even a Newbury type goal. Scrappy fox in the box finish by Andy Saunders had brought us level. With the wind in our sails now it was only a matter of time before we got the winner. Our own Veron wannabe smashed a free kick top corner. We even had time for Mr Va Va Voom to smash one in from the edge of the box.

The grit and determination was there and we got the result we deserved and needed.

Now for the ratings

Graham “Newbury’s No1” Tritton GK
Absolutely superb, kept us in a game we didn’t deserve to be in after our first half performance. 9/10

Chris “Fat Animal who trains on Tuesday’s now” Wallbank RB
Didn’t have the best of halves, but soon got into the swing of things and started being an outlet on the right. 7/10

Nick “Mr Two Footer” Marable CB
Wasn’t at his best at the start like a lot of players, but started to command from the back and win almost everything in the air in the second half. 7/10

Richard “DISCO” Saunders CB
Found it tough with the opposition pressing high so much and not giving him as much time as he wanted. 6/10

Tom “Welsh Boy Band” Starling
Look a bit lost at the start, but imposed himself on the game and started to be a real threat in the second half. 7/10

Brad “Holding” Gates DM
Quiet throughout, but tried to get on with the job in hand, still learning the role but could become even better than the Kaiser. 7/10

Toch “Veron” Singh AM
Trademark free kick and flashes of brilliance. Just need to get it to be longer periods of time. 7/10

Tom “Tomole” Gibbings AM
Got about his job quietly, but still needs to dominate for longer periods in a game. 7/10

Jon “Mr Versatile” Galligan WL
Gave us another shift for the team out wide, always probing and looking to create things.  7/10

Andy “Goal Machine” Saunders CF
Always trying to stretch the play, took his goal well but should have probably scored more. 7/10

Alfie “Xmas do is gonna cost me” Egembah WR
Fluttered in and out of the game, needed to get on the ball more and affect the game. 7/10
